    The fiasco continues. The irresponsible
Japanese elite are a disgrace to humanity. This is an international catastrophe and needs the full brunt of the global nuclear community, including their funds, to find a solution immediately.

I sincerely hope that we don't get this in San Onofre CA, or Diablo Canyon. Even thorough they shut down SO this year, they continue to store the nuclear waste at the plant. It was not designed for permanent storage and could melt down if we get a strong California earthquake, since it is surrounded by fault lines. There are millions of people in the south Los Angeles to San Diego area that would suffer.

where's SFA for a update on the situation?
Depressing read. Seems the world just ignores what is going on hoping it solves itself.

So there's enough contaminated water to fill 130 olympic sized pools. Do they pump the same contaminated water back into the buildings to cool the cores or used more fresh water? They won't be using sea water anyhow as it'll corrode the buildings.

There's a story doing the rounds, radiation levels taken shortly after the disaster were 100 millisieverts/hr but the equipment used only read upto 100. Updated equipment show readings in 1000's millisieverts/hr. These guys are suppose to be smart or a bunch of clowns?

6.3 quake today. How many storage tanks did that rumble? those water tanks are held together with sticky tape and not even welded. Another local quake and it'll be game over there.
    Incompentent bunch.

    Default Fukushima 18 month update

I don't believe for one second they are incompetent to resolve it. I think it's all about the money. Tepco is insolvent and nobody wants to step up and take responsibility until the recent $400B commitment. It's also about long run vs short run mentality. They try to manage the radiation contamination perception as benign because it is not causing suffering in the short run and it will be difficult to connect the dots in the long run.

One part you've got wrong is there's a WHOLE LOT more contaminated water than that. They've been pumping in sea water for months on top of a molten core sitting in fractured bed rock and what's escaping will soon be reaching the West Coast of USA.

At least that's what I've heard..........I'm glad I've only got another 35 years at most to worry about it. Feel sorry for my son and grandchildren though.

Sadly it's not just the waters though I'm abstaining from my favorite weekly Wild Alaskan Smoked Salmon.

There have been reports of our happy California cows grazing on high levels of fuku cesium. So the gov just changes our max allowable dose up by x10! It's ridiculous! Our scientists need to monitor it. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been captured by monied interests.

10x max radiation is now the new and accepted norm. Next year maybe 100x will be, depending on what the sea water off California is.

And here in Florida I've only had the BP oil spill to complain about.

When the JG/Tepco says the 300 ton container spill will be dispersed in the Pacific with no ill effect, they don't account for the contaminated ground water washing under the plant.
Approx 300 tons of ground water washes from above the hills under the plant into the pacific daily. In 6 years time the whole pacific will be awash with all the toxic rubbish coming from the melted cores.

And Tokyo wins the home city of the next Olympics. I think I'll pass on that one.

Brazil is next and Tokyo in 2020. Maybe that will help get them to spend more money and effort to mitigate the situation. Activists will surely shine a light in it.

One gray is the absorption of one joule of energy in the form of ionizing radiation per kilogram of matter whereas one Bq is defined as the activity of a quantity of radioactive material in which one nucleus decays per second.

There is no number that you multiply Ci and Bq by to get R or rad and Sv or Gy. Different isotopes emit different energy gammas and some emit more than one gamma. At the same rate of emission or decay, an isotope that emits more and higher energy gammas will give a higher rem/hr or Sv/hr. Ci and Bq are based on dpm/sec (dps). Consider the same emission rate (dps) for Cs-137 and Co-60. Co-60 will give you a higher dose-rate and dose because it emits two gammas above 1000 keV where Cs-137 emits only 1 gamma at 661.8 keV. Obviously Co-60 is emitting more electromagnetic energy per decay than Cs-137 which will give one a higher dose-rate in R/hr or Sv/hr. Also, the dose and dose-rate varies with the distance from the source.

    Just sayin....
This seems straight out of a textbook so technically you're right about there being no number to convert radioactivity to corresponding dose rate. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a correlation.

There are empirical relationships between the two that depend on a lot of factors (type of isotope, biological factor, distance between source and target, etc...)
