Yes- if you want to see how far airborne particulate will carry look at the Iceland volcanic eruption. Chernobyl contaminated parts of the EU despite winds prevailing in the opposite direction.

Also keep in mind Chernobyl was a partial breach releasing only 5% of the stack into the atmosphere. The Japanese are dealing with multiple coolant failures at multiple reactors, are completely isolated from ground support, the pumps are clogging from mud and debris...

I got paid an a$$load of money as an intel analyst making projections based on sketchy info. My .02 is that this does NOT look good and it is better to stack the deck in your favor ahead of time vice waiting for the Government and FEMA to bail you out. Ask the people in NOLA how that worked for them

I think you are dead nuts on about this. Good call. Just be careful about Potassium overload as it is dangerous to your heart. Get the dosage right.

I picked some up from CVS earlier. The pharmacist gave me a real odd look when I asked for it.....but none the less sold it to me.

    +1

The packaging should have dosages by weight/age.

In regards to the reactor a "station blackout" is one of the single worst thing that could happen. DoE here in the states looks at it like a "doomsday scenario".

Once the pumps stop the water boils off (already happening). Crews can release steam to control the pressure from the boiling however the valves and controls will work only while powered. In a S.B.O. the batteries last approx 8 hours. Once they draw down, the core cooling apparatus will stop putting water into the stack. If the stack is exposed there is the chance of the actual rods igniting, starting a meltdown of the core which would boil off remaining water and breach the reactor vessel. Once this happens there is the possibility of containment breach due to rapid expansion of gases from the reactor vessel and you wind up with (best case) a 3 Mile Island situation where the techs get the pumps running again or worst case Chernobyl.

When you also take into consideration the Japanese will not order workers and techs into the contaminated and inhospitable control rooms at gunpoint it honestly doesn't look very good. Currently the temps in the control areas are in excess of 100C/200F and rad levels are 1000x normal. Workers are still attempting to maintain things but there is only so much a rad suit is going to take. If they are able to restore normal cooling within 24 hours... life is good. If not... not so much.

What might save their butts is an airlift of fresh batteries but eventually they are going to run out of these things. Not your average D cell Ever-Ready here

Japanese officials have finally said a full meltdown is possible with the malfunctioning Fukushima.

Cesium isotopes have also been detected outside 3 of the 6 reactors with no operational cooling systems in place.

Cesium about guarantees that the stack is going critical. If there is stack involvement and the zirconium coating on the fuel rods is brittle or combusting the hops is that the containment building will hold. The blast produced by the hydrogen and oxygen liberated from the water by the intense heat would be enormous.

When you add in that many of the individual reactors are part of a single larger complex the possibility of cascade failure is a real possibility.

Keeping my fingers crossed but this is REALLY not looking good!

Right now two of the stacks are dry and undergoing uncontrolled fission. The heat generated has liberated hydrogen and oxygen from whatever water is left in the reactor vessel. The fuel rods and boron framework are melting into slag in a pool at the bottom of the reactor vessel and will continue to heat past 7000 degrees F. Cesium is definitive proof of active fission.

This slag will breach the reactor vessel. No question or doubt- this will happen. The problem then is a massive influx of fresh air from the interior of the containment building causing the hydrogen and oxygen mixture to expand rapidly along with the slag flashing over- essentially the air itself ignites. The blast from this most likely will breach the containment building (the concrete exterior) as the GE-Hitachi BWR is known to have a deficient design in this aspect.

What will be released will be similar to a volcanic eruption but with the contents of the cloud shooting into the troposphere being radioactive debris- everything from vaporized concrete to the actual fuel stack itself in microfine particulate form. This cloud will circumnavigate the globe similar to a large volcanic eruption.

Look at what Chernobyl did to Russia and the Western EU. Now realize the Russians ordered rescue crews into the complex at gunpoint, they had unrestricted land access to the site and that they were able to pour enough concrete in quickly enough so that only 5% of the total stack escaped into the atmosphere. None of these conditions are present at Fukushima. Fukushima is going to be an unadulterated core meltdown and breach IMO and it's going to happen within the next 24-36 hours.

Everything to this point has progressed according to the way I have said it was going to. I truly, honestly swear to all that is Holy that my progression analysis from this point forward is wrong but I do not think that it will be.

The coolant supposedly shipped to Japan will do no good at this point- the core has melted. Introducing coolant into a melted core would cause an instant BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) and utterly shred the containment structure. The reactors are doomed- they have already failed. What needs to hold now is a containment building design known to be substandard.

So it is confirmed that there was an explosion? Is it confirmed a major radiation leak? How soon will it hit the US? Or will it?
