Default A look at my Tempus Machina 216A Sub... Basket case!

    Hey all,

I thought I'd post a few pics of a piece that I picked up M2M here recently, knowing that it would need a new movement - it was described as "not working" and that the crown "falls out" - and I think I've found out why...

The first thing I noticed upon unpacking it was that the dial and rehaut were covered in little bits of "stuff" (that wasn't really noticeable in the FS pics):

"Hmm... I wonder what that stuff is?" I thought, and tried opening the caseback with a rubber ball and my cheap caseback tools, but had no luck. So I ordered a proper set of caseback sockets for Roley backs which arrived today, and enabled me to get the back off...

    Ah.

It'll be fine. Just needs oiling.

Okay, and a bit of a cleanup.

The dial back doesn't look quite as bad with the spacer ring removed. Hopefully I can clean it up without wrecking the whole thing, because it is rather nice...

I then tried to pop the bezel off, in order to be able to clean up the case without any extra parts attached, but it really won't budge. So I popped the crystal and got the insert out, which will hopefully be enough of a strip-down to clean the case interior thoroughly.

And that was my first experience of opening up a watch and taking it apart. I reckon I could have picked an easier project for starters...

Thanks Larry, appreciate it! (It might be good to edit your post to remove the complete quote of my OP!)

I think the previous owner took the process of aging a little to far. More vanquished than vintage.

That's going to be way more time, energy, money than it's worth. It's a 21j with severe rust damage. Let it go before you lose anymore to it.

Yes, you're right P4GTR - hence the first sentence of my post, "I thought I'd post a few pics of a piece that I picked up M2M here recently, knowing that it would need a new movement"

Indeed Micky - I think a previous owner assumed that any Submariner was automatically waterproof, just because of the name... hehe! And this is the watch I wanted to ask you about a replacement movement for (when you have time). Either replace it with another DG-2813 or a Miyota 8215.

While I'm editing this post, I'll also add a question - any recommendations for cleaning the rust off the case parts? I was going to toothbrush it all in a water and bicarb solution.

I'm sure I can sort that for you, I would strip the case down and give the bare mid-case an ultrasonic hot bath in my cleaning mixture, this would clean up the rust, and any pitting left I would smooth out by hand.

Nice work buddy....as i said before, just replace the mvt, stem and crown...If you can't get the right mvt, I can ask my watchmaker, he has a few spare with case clamps..
    Wasn't the waterdamage mentioned?

Thanks Micky, I appreciate that. But I'm going to attempt the cleanup myself. I was interested when you mentioned that you potentially had movements for sale. I think on this first project I should stick to a direct replacement for the dead DG-2813. If you don't have one for sale, then a recommendation for a trustworthy online source would be appreciated (I know I could go to Cousins, but their price for a 2813 seems rather high!).

You also mentioned you have an 8mm Brevet crown? If so, I believe it would also need a Stem Adapter from 0.90 to 1.20 stem size, to fit a 2813 movement.

I was toying with the idea of making the whole thing look aged, but I think as this is my first basic rebuild project, I'm going to keep it as simple as possible (albeit with the cleaning up to do) and concentrate on putting it back together so it works. That'll be a good step in the right direction!

Hah! Hi capice, you snuck a reply in while I wasn't looking! Yeah - I definitely had your advice in mind while I ummed and ahhed about this, and of course you're right. Also, thanks for the offer - if your man's got the mvt, then I'd certainly appreciate it if you could look into that.

There are endless Bay sellers offering "DG-2813" but most of their photos don't seem to be of verifiable Dixmont movements.

Seeing as yours is a no date, you would be fine with any of those DG 21J movements. As to the BEVET crown I have here, I will check the size stem it allows, some 21J stems are the same pitch as ETA Clones.

I remember Reg/Narikaa sold this some time ago new for around 100 GBP...nice piece to practise on...better get another crystal for it, imo these didn't have LEC.

You're right capice - given they are meant to embrace the spirit of "vintage", a LEC doesn't look right. And the Tempus Machina watch has a vintage style domed crystal. I'll need to search out a domed plexi.

I found virtually the same Tempus Machina rep listed on Trusty Time too - but a Noob factory version with A-2836, hence $278. And although the description on TT describes the crystal as "domed plexi" (actually, "Doom Plexi Plastic, Same Dimension and Interchangeable with Genuine"), the watch in the photos and video also has the same flat style LEC as mine.

Thanks capice! According to the worid's cheapest digital micrometer, the LEC diameter is 30.5mm

Aww... Everyone's gonna laugh at me now... But I have to ask. WRT buying a replacement DG2813, would it be as simple as just sticking a pin in Ebay - for instance, THIS?

Not that I'm planning to, until capice has confirmed if his watchsmith has one I could buy. I'm just ascertaining whether one needs to be more discerning when it comes to picking out a 2813.

Brexitania... LOL! (Although many of us are far from LOLing at what is going on. Jeezus...) Plus, on the packaging of those crystals they're marked "Made in the Common Market"... the irony!

The high domed profile is the sort of plexi I was imagining would look good. What do you think? If you let me know what I owe you for one, I'd really appreciate it!

And if my Googling isn't mistaken, those Stella crystals were made in Dutchland. Nice!
