Default Panerai 005M Noob Factory Review and Pictorial

    Model: Panerai 005 M serial
    Maker: Noob factory
    Movement: Asian 6497 21,600 (Hi-beat)

    Intro
This is my first watch review and first PAM rep. I had been searching for a PAM 005 and saw a raffle on Repgeek before Christmas for a noob 005 and 112. I remember thinking what the heck winning an 005 would be great. Never dreamed I would actually win the watch! I’ve been meaning to write a review of it ever since but time flys. Hope you enjoy the review and pictures. Review first then some pics.

    First Impressions
I really enjoy this watch and the quality is excellent, not just as a rep but as a watch in it’s own right. I was impressed when the watch arrived and picking it up for the first time it just feels great in your hand and on the wrist. Nice heft but not too much (IMHO). Even someone that doesn’t know what a Panerai watch is would likely be impressed with the overall build quality.

    Movement / Winding
The crown guard lever has a nice snap to it and the movement seems very tight. The crown seems to have a fair amount of resistance as you’re winding the watch and you can feel the crown roll or snap back slightly as you’re winding it. Kind of like it’s on a rubber band. You can feel the resistance increase as you wind it and I typically stop it after 40 winds. This is good enough to keep the watch going for at least 24hrs or longer. I haven’t bothered to try and wind it to a ‘stop’ and calculate the full power reserve. The overall accuracy seems very good but I’m not overly concerned with how many seconds I may be gaining or losing on a manual watch. I figure I’ll be double checking the time on it daily when I go to wind it anyway.

    Dial / Lume
The sausage dial is very well done and looks like it is filled in with lume. The lume glows strong and bright for several hours however there is noticeable dimming after an hour or so. I haven’t done a real test but so far it doesn't seem like it lasts the whole night. It doesn’t bother me too much as most of my gen watches are pretty similar. One other thing to note is that the lume on the hands appears to glow brighter than the dial and is perhaps a different shade of green. However at full charge and in a dark room the hands and dial glow the same color. It’s just in the daytime / dusk and the watch isn’t fully charged and you walk into the shadows that you notice the hands are brighter.

    Case / Crown Guard
The case looks spot on, I’m sure the fanatics can point out the differences in the bezel width, lug angle, how the case meets the crystal or whatnot but too me it’s close enough. The noob crown guard and lever seems really good and the lever operates nicely.

    Crystal
I believe that his one has the dual AR and looks colorless to me. Again I’m not sure how this compares to gen and if there should be some green or blue hue to the AR but this doesn’t exhibit any color cast as far as I can tell. The crystal is fairly clear and in full sunlight it looks very clear. If it does have the double AR, I’m not that concerned about scratching the AR coating. As soon as that happens I’ll likely just remove the entire outer AR coating and the problem should be solved – back to single AR. Perhaps I’m missing something here but the whole issue with dual AR seems a bit overblown.

    Caseback
As you likely know these have a closed caseback. Serial numbers I believe are run sequentially – not sure how many runs they may have done of this one? The engraving looks nice and at least in pictures comparable to gen. Although I imagine that the engraving is likely ‘lighter’ and not as deep as the gen engraving (as it seems to be the case with most reps when it comes to engraving).

    Strap
This one came on the rep rubber strap. When I first got it I was impressed with the quality of the rubber and it’s softness. No smell that I could detect. The buckle looks great and polished to match the case.

    Summary

    Pros
    Solid gen-like construction
    Hi-beat movement
Colourless AR is actually pretty nice
Dial looks good, lume is nicely applied with that ‘filled-in’ look
Dial does glow like a torch when charged

    Cons
Hands and dial have slightly different lume application
Dial perhaps not as gen looking as H-fac? On this point I don’t really care that much about it – it looks good to me

I would give this an 8.5 out of 10 if not for the lume issue this would be 9 out of 10 in my book. Only a gen 005 could rate a 10

Truth be told if I had purchased an 005 I would likely have gone with the H-fac version based on reading the threads. Having said that I am very impressed with this noob version and after several months of ownership am perfectly happy with it. I don't really feel any need to switch this for an H-fac version.

    Thanks for reading.

Now on to the pictures - what you really wanted to see anyway

Some Dial Close-ups.....having looked at a few pics of gen dials online I think it looks pretty close

Macro Shot showing the 'filled-in' lume application

    Lume Shots

    Nice glow

You can kind of see in this pic the hands are a bit brighter

Nice noob crown guard...and yes I've got scratches on the bezel already

    Caseback nicely engraved

    Some random shots to enjoy

Hey - thanks everyone of the nice words.

Regarding the strap, it's a Bob Marino in Siena color. I added a pic to the review to show the back of the strap.

The pictures do make it look really nice but it isn't quite as dark brown/red as the pics seem to indicate. I think the color is more saturated in the pics. In person it is more closer to a natural brown and not that reddish. It's not super thick. This can actually be nice if you want something a little lower profile it makes it a bit easier to get the watch under your cuff on workdays.

Good eyes Yako, it does look like the second hand glows a bit brighter in the pics. I checked and in person it's not really noticeable. It may be a slightly brighter but really only stands out in the pics.
