Default Do something good today!*RG Award Winning Thread*

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

Every one of us has a chance to do something good today for the price of some postage.

Most of you know I am playing in the big sandbox for the next couple years. One of my tasks here is essentially "hearts and minds" type stuff written large. I unf**k situations MNF-I forces have aggravated.

Now here's the point. One village we deal with is dirt poor. I don't mean no TV poor; I am talking no running water, no safe drinking water, no electricity, mud hut poor. What they are very heavy on is Islam and it's attendant predjudices against females.

The little girls in this village are essentially neglected unless one of them is promised to another, richer, relative as a wife (sometimes as young as 8 or 9 years old). Needless to say it is rough on all of us seeing how these kids live.

What I am looking for is donations of used clothing, shoes (especially), socks, stuffed animals, dolls, non-electric/battery toys, sports equipment (they LOVE soccer)- anything that would be age appropriate for young girls between the ages of 2 to 16.

My team has already spent several thousand dollars out of our own pockets buying new items, but we cannot keep this up- we also have families to maintain. Men's and boys items are no worries since they are well taken care of by the locals.

If any of you can find it in your hearts to go through your kids closets and find items that no longer fit, are not in style or are unwanted, please consider making a trip to the Post Office and having a major positive impact on someone's life 6000 miles away.

I will continue to update this thread as time goes on with pictures and video so everyone can see the softer side of counter-insurgency; and it DOES make a difference. From the first time we arrived where everyone hid to sitting down with the village haji and imam sipping tea in safety is a massive shift in attitude. We want to continue to make their lives a little better and more tolerable.

(* edit: TF Valhalla have rotated back into their originating units and has disbanded. Thanks to all who contributed and for those who wish to continue to do so- look around your hometown and I am sure you can find some family to lend a helping hand to. Good wishes and good deeds should not be wasted)

    Thank you and God bless.

Yes, an APO address is essentially the same as a US one. For customs forms USA is the country no matter if the physical APO is in Iraq, Japan or Africa- it is considered US territory.

Only difference is they do not deliver mail- you go to pick it up. To see the looks on these kids faces when they get a box of things they need more than anyone else I can think of makes the extra effort and time spent well worth it.

Kind of chokes me up to tell the truth. You can actually FEEL the gratitude and it is something I will never forget.

    P.S. to the Mods:

I have posted the APO and my name since I am not online very often and replying to an inbox of PM messages would take me forever.

I am a member of the SurfRider foundation myself.

I buy wristbands at 20 a piece. i buy 4 each year. youde be supprised how far 80 usd goes in these poor countries!

The money goes to helping tsunami victims rebuild, food, and medical supplies. A bunch of surfers were involved in the tsunami and decided to make a difference.

This is a great thing too.

We dont realize how cushy we have it. We sit on our asses and b**ch on a 1000 dollar computer about how our fake sub's date mag is misalighned!

Beleive it or not...in retrtospective...we are all abunch of toolbags. But hey. what can u do LOL

    A side note:

The girl with the headband is already married off. Imagine being 9 and MARRIED to some old fart!

The girl in the purple is not promised to anyone- notice the condition of her hair vs. the married one.

C'mon Geeks help us bring a smile to someone over here! I can even have our terps write a note in Arabic saying "This is from (first name only) and I live in (country) or include a personal message.

Darn interpreters have it too easy anyway LOL

All packages will be picked up by me personally (APO will not release anything to anyone other than the addressee).

All packages will be disbursed by my team and I somewhere in the middle of the Iraqi version of the Mojave. Photos and video of each drop will be taken and pics posted on this thread every week.

On behalf of myself, my team and a small desert village that used to be filled with insurgents but now welcomes us- Thank you!

Anubis and I will be sending a box with some toys. I have 6 nieces and nephews they have everything and live in luxury and I see how happy they are to get gifts. I can just imagine how much a child with little or nothing would feel to get a gift. Thank you for being a caring person, I would be honored to help by sending something that may brighten a little ones life, even if for just a brief moment.

    Thank you

I support 3 children in Africa monthly - been doing it for over 6 years.

Let me go through my daughter's stuff. Wish I knew about this a little sooner as I sent some of her stuff to a local charity.

SFA: you're doing such meaningful work over there.

Thank you all for your donations!

I wish I could describe actually being there when we hand out a teddy bear or a pair of sneakers. For once I am at a loss for words since there is nothing in the English language to describe it. It is like the feeling you get from a first kiss, or seeing your child take his/her first steps or say his/her first word.

That "shukhran" (thank you) just melts your heart and I'm about as hardcore as they come.

It's not part of our actual mission statement and would probably get all of us jammed up with our chain of command but sometimes you just have to do the right thing and I believe this is it.

    Let me add-

Whether or not you support or disagree with the US being in Iraq has 0 bearing on whether or not you can have a chance to improve the life of a young girl who is destined to a life of being treated like property, living in crushing poverty, forced to move in public completely covered in black robes and shrouds, prevented from driving or travelling unless it is with a male relation as an escort under penalty of death, bearing children for someone 20-30 years her senior until she dies in childbirth or from disease.

This is about bringing a moment of pleasure into a life of degradation.

We've done the official "hearts and minds" stuff. This is above and beyond and addresses a population segment that (to the local population) does not matter.

66 people have viewed the thread already. I'm hoping 20% are on their way to the postal offices.

Yes hard candies will make the trip just fine. July and August tends to melt them but the weather has changed and it doesn't get above 100 anymore.

I will enclose notes in each parcel, written in Arabic, with a first name and country of the donor and a short note saying hello and that you hope they enjoy the present.

It will be nice to let a forgotten and abused group of people know that individuals from all over the world care. Sometimes just knowing someone, somewhere, gives a s**t helps.

Just toss whatever you have in a box and mail it off addressed exactly as above.

It does require a customs form (go figure) but otherwise the same as mailing a package to someone in the States.

Toss a small note inside if you wish and I will have one of our inside-the-wire terps translate it into Arabic. Like I said before they're getting lazy with us on the road all the time!

SF what a great cause this is mate. I will be going to the stores this week and getting a box together of the things you have mentioned there and sending it out. Let me know if there is one thing more than another that is a necesity.

    Sylr;

Anything appropriate for the age range for girls is perfect. When I say these people have nothing I mean they have less than 0. A mud hut, some goats and sheep and one article of clothing, so anything is a gift from God.

Wow, I've been skipping this thread the entire day without realizing what was about. This is a great cause, I'll certainly try to help. My wife is a teacher at a major pre-school here in South Florida and she can pass the word on to some of the parents to collect the necessary items, I'll help as well. It is great to see that in the sometimes superfluous world of watches we don't forget about others and thats what makes RG a great community. SF keep this thread alive.
