That's a great gesture, even if i don't support the war you are in, i can recognise when someone does good, keep it up.

Attention Mods - Could we sticky this so all can see it?

My wife and I just cleaned up some toys our kids outgrew. We were going to send them to a local Salvation Army but they have a new destination, now. Mix in some bags of Sweet-tarts and Skittles ( I love Skittles) and its a go!

SFA, thanks so much for posting this request. You really opened up some eyes here to a large part of this war that we do not always see.

Stay safe out there and thanks again for the info.

Brother, I don't support the war I'm in I'd MUCH rather be home with my wife and son than tromping around this open pit latrine.

Saddam was an a$$hole, and brutal to boot, but it wasn't our problem to try to solve. Tired of being used as the world's police to tell the truth!

    Bump for a great thread.

SFA, I'll send out a box at the end of the week, when I'm back home.

Keep up the great work in a place that is so punishing.

Stuffed animals are a good bet as are generic baby dolls. Barbie would be considered a tad too Western, especially with some of the costumes LOL

Beanie Babies seem to be a monster hit also.

Last trip we handed out quite a few Dollar Store flip-flops. Sandals are the preferred footwear over here in rural areas.

We supply soaps, shampoos, toiletries, drinking water and JP-8 for a generator that was installed, although stateside "girly" soap and shampoo is also a hit. We're currently pooling money to get a couple TV sets and a satellite reciever with a 5 year card for the local imam and village haji.

I'm uploading the video of our last pass through the area. The video shows the desparation and the elation a lot better than stills ever will.

Problem is we're on hajinet right now LOL Local provider so we can do things like surf the Geek without Uncle Sugar or a short tempered bird pouncing on our a$$es and the bandwidth is non-existent. Hopefully will be all uploaded tomorrow AM.

Just sent a package. Could only find a few things from my daughter (we gave a lot of her stuff to charity already) so I went down to the Salvation Army and bought some stuff (the sale of those items goes to another good cause) and just shipped everything in a box.

SFA - post those photos with the girls wearing the Spartan donations!

    Guys,

First thank you for the donations. You have no idea how much it will mean to these children. They live short, hard lives and any ray of sunshine that breaks through the clouds is a gift from heaven. You are truly doing God's work bringing a moment of happiness to these young girls.

Second, pics will be taken of the items being handed out and posted on this thread as Operation Geek progresses.

Third, notes will be written in Arabic to be given to the village haji and Imam with the donor's first name and Country/State/Province (no PERSEC violations) and a "best wishes" type message to let the people know where the gifts came from.

Again, thanks to all the Geeks who have collected items and mailed packages. To the rest of the Geeks who have viewed this thread- get off your a$$ LOL.

Seriously I'm driving through what is currently IED alley in Iraq to deliver them- all it takes is 10 bucks and a trip to the post office. You can even stop for a cup of coffee and a bagel on your way back!

sfa, if you can get some pics, in country, that would be TERRIFIC and I'm sure spark a boost/outpouring of more donations/children's gifts.

Pics will most definitely be posted, just wish I had the bandwidth to post video!

Video will be taken also and those who have donated, if they wish, will be mailed a DVD or CD of the items being handed out to the children. DVD/CD choice is limited to what is available in this miserable excuse for a PX.

Talked with my team Sgt and he suggested we do it as a general children's items drive as opposed to girls only. So all of you Geeks who have boys- start cleaning out closets, they're in the game also.

On behalf of TF Valhalla and our adopted village, thank you and God Bless.

Sylar- the video is 132MB, same issues with a 8kb/sec upload rate. Add in spotty electricity in our CHU area and the unreliability of the dam hajinet provider- it's an exercise in extreme frustration.
