Default SCAMMED - A Must Read for New Members

Recently there has been a large number of "I've been scammed threads", these usually end up in "My apologies to xxxx" threads.

Certainly there are scammers on RG, they are everywhere even on the gen forums but thankfully and due to members and staff efforts the number of scammers roaming the pages of RG is very small compared to the regular good traders.

    ITRADER
The Itrader feedback should be your first point of reference when you're about to buy/sell/trade with another member. This system works similarly to the ebay feedback system and should be used for every transaction you preform with members of RG. If for instance you buy from a member with 100 positive feedbacks for several transactions and your item is not with you on the expected time chances are it is retained at the post office, or there were delays in shipping rather than the member all of a sudden became a scammer. This is why it is important to leave feedback for every transaction.

If you feel like you've been scammed what should you do?

First you should try to contact the member and ask for information on the trade. Please bare in mind that although some members visit the forums daily, others don't. On each member's profile you'll be able to check his last activity, if he wasn't active since you PM'ed him chances are he hasn't seen the PM and therefore didn't reply, don't assume that he doesn't reply because he is a scammer, and don't assume he will reply instantly, it just doesn't happen that way.
Give it a couple of days at least, if you get no reply from the member, then move to the next step.

The second line of defense is contacting staff, Admins and Moderators are here to help the community, they have access to information like e-mail address of the member and IP addresses used. They will e-mail the member about the transaction and try to get some feedback from the member regarding to your transaction. All the feedback will either be related to you or they will put you in contact with the member directly. Please remember that this may take a few days too, people have holidays, work assignments, etc, etc and may not have access to the forums for a few days. Patience is key so be patient.

If this doesn't work, then it is likely that you have been scammed, then and only then you should post a ALERT thread to alert other members not to deal with this member. The staff member will advise you when to post the ALERT thread. This must be an informative thread rather than a bash of the other person, no matter how pi$$ed you are at that person. There's simply no point in insulting someone else, it won't get your money back nor will it lead you anywhere good.

Keep in mind if you payed through PP you have 45 days to open a dispute on a payment, its a pretty reasonable time window in my opinion and allows you to give enough time to the seller and the staff to sort the situation out. This only applies to regular paypal payments goods/services/etc if you pay by GIFT you forfeit the right to open a dispute. GIFT payments are strongly discouraged by the staff of RG, so if you're going to pay by gift make sure you're confortable with the seller and be aware that you have NO protection if anything goes bad.

Assuming from the get go that you've been scammed will only stress you even further and the majority of the times without any reason, like the endless apologies threads have proven in the past. Remember that every thread you open calling someone a scammer you are damaging that persons reputation within the community, if you do the same in real life you're likely to get sued for defamation. So be patient and allow for a amicable resolution to the problem, allow time for the staff to deal with your problem and help you out before coming out claiming something that you don't even know is the case.

There is cross forum cooperation with scammers and IP addresses are shared through the several communities to help make this and other forums safe for us to deal with, there will be scams no doubt but keep in mind these will be a very small percentage of the cases and your transaction isn't likely to be one. Parcels get delayed, or lost, people get held and can't post on the date they thought they would be able to, there are public holidays in other countries that sometimes prevent the item from shipping the date you think it would, customs can take time to clear your item, these times vary a lot, it can take hours or days and sometimes weeks, the item can be seized, etc, etc etc there's loads of things that can happen that don't necessarily mean the seller has scammed you.

So if you're facing problems, keep a cool head, be patient and use all the options available to you on the forums before coming out in the open calling someone a scammer.

I hope this helps the new members to act the right way when they feel something is not going according to plan.

    Good Luck with your trades!

    Worth posting this -

I MAY or MAY NOT have been scammed a couple of weeks back. I am giving the seller the benefit of the doubt for at least another week.
I have liased with sfa437 and am keeping him informed.
A death in the family, electricity cut off, laptop stolen went on holiday and forgot - These are ALL possible and equally it may have been a scumbag rip off. Never RUSH to judgement. If the money has gone it has gone - if it hasnt it saves having to undo a bad reputation unfairly given.

Does this still apply if sent as "gift" the guy I may have a problem with INSISTED mine was as gift

Gift payments cannot be disputed, hence the reason the staff DON'T recommend you pay as a gift.
GIFT payments are to be used as gifts and gifts only you forfeit all the right to a dispute when you use this option.

Further gift payments are investigated regularly by paypal and even if you are on the receiving end of these payments, you run the risk of having your pp account suspended for misuse. It wouldn't be the first time this happened to a member here.
If you use pp and want to use the gift option you're on your own, you should know the risks associated with these transactions and why they aren't recommended.
If a seller insists on GIFT payment and you don't feel comfortable with the seller or for instance he has a low feedback rating, my suggestion is WALK AWAY. Plenty of other watches out there.

Great post rr and 100% spot on...

I'd also add from a seller's point of view to do everything to protect yourself as well...I tend to take pictures of the entire packing and shipping process down to the receipts and tracking #'s and send those off to the buyer to assure them that you've done what you said you were going to do as well as proof that you did in fact send out the item....it's an added step that does take a little extra time and effort, but one I don't mind doing given people's hard earned money is at stake

Much needed sticky!! Some guys on here like to stir the pot and sit back and watch the fireworks. But luckily there are some great admins/mods who really have your best interests at heart. Found myself in a similar situation recently where I thought a guy may have gone awol but I sent a couple of messages, kept my head and had a mod look into it for me. Turns out he was a straight up guy but life had reared its ugly head and he was tied up out of town for a few days. Thanks RR (subliminal message - buy the hublot)

LOL you're the third one with that message, I don't know if what moves you guys is the watch itself or the desire of seeing me homeless though.

I had a plan in mind but the seller has a lot of interest and my plan may take a good few days (maybe up till the start of next week if something goes a little wrong with the transfers). Its not fair for me to hold him for so long when he's got so much interest so I asked him until later today and I'll have a little chat with the better half and see what can be done. I think I may have to sell something to get this one though!!!! I hate selling watches though I always regret it no matter how little I wear them.

RR, I personally hate sending funds as a gift. My question though, being that we are buying a rep. Is that even protected by PP??? So does it really make a difference in actuality? Just asking. Please don't yell! I'm fragile. LMAO!

As long as you don't mention counterfeit material it shouldn't be a problem. You can even say that you bought a watch although I would recommend a more general approach like item.
Its not on the sellers interest either to reveal he's selling counterfeit material as that may lead to legal problems. Although its not illegal in most countries to buy/wear replicas, selling them is illegal in (I think) all countries, so if you don't mention a replica the seller won't either. As such if you purchase a "item" and the "item" wasn't delivered you can open a dispute. Remember to allow sufficient time for this though. Even PP wont take you seriously if you open a dispute within a week of payment being sent. You have 45 days to do so from the date of the payment so give the seller some time before you open a dispute.

On a side note, disputes with paypal should be avoided at all costs when dealing with replicas, the last thing we want is to draw more attention to our dealers and the members of boards like RG. This is your last option and should only be used as such. Be patient, give the dealer/seller some time to sort the situation, check their feedback and if they have a proven track record give them the benefit of the doubt. Use PP disputes only as a last resort and if all other option have been exhausted.

    Hope it helps.

Most buyers unfortunately won't read this. They might get caught in the gift payment scam. I feel therefore that gift payments should be banned from sales threads.

I think if the information is readily available both here and on paypal they don't read if they don't want to and only have themselves to blame if they get caught in a scheme involving gift payments. Its been said many many times and its a sticky in the sales sections on the forum that GIFT payments are discouraged.

Great post! This is a must read. One thing i wanted to add. LIke RR mentioned, do not pay anyone as a gift. Just do regular business without that option. This is a little backwards but here is something else that could go wrong. I got a newbie to pay as a gift, just too make sure i would get my money. His credit card was cancelled and i was not ablet to get my money because it was sent as a gift. Paypal took the money back and my account was in the negative. I managed to get him to pay me again because it was just a accident that his credit card got cancelled. So either way you do it, your not always safer with the gift option.
