Thumbs up Crowdsourcing: A Few Qs for you custom strap Geeks!

    Hey Guys!

Just trying to get an idea of a couple of things, checking on the viability of a project.

I have access to authentic Hermes leather, straight from the official Tanneries in France and Germany, and boy, the leather is something else!

I am thinking of using this leather to make watch straps, and use authentic beeswax thread (same as Hermes), to finish them off nicely. Of course, Hermes watches and some Apple watches use Hermes leather on their straps, so I know that the leather is great for a strap, long lasting, durable and visually striking.

Is this something fresh and new that would excite you guys? If i get enough interest then I will spring for some leather and make some straps to show you all.

    Cheers!

    Francis

    Really liking the idea!!
Wondering what colour(‘s) you’re thinking of.
Also would like to know what the cost would be approximately.

Depends on how well you're able to produce straps. Handmade or machine made? The price would also be a major consideration. The strap market is fierce. Quality leather is relatively easy to find, albeit expensive to purchase in quantity. Aside from saying it's Hermes, more specifically which Hermes leather(s) can you source and can you prove it's provenance? They use a variety of leathers, which color and grain do you have access to, and what is remarkable about it? f you have contacts in China to get machine made production runs at low cost then it could be viable. If you have a hookup on sides of the leather, it may be worth considering selling the leather itself to someone better suited for the production. Small batches of finest handmade straps, or really well produced (think Swiss luxury level) machine made OEM style straps would both do well if done right. I'd be interested in talking with you about it, if not making some myself (I'd certainly scalp some leather for my inventory) I have contacts that would I'm sure be interested so long as it wasn't price prohibitive.

PM me if you want to sell your Kevin, Ted Su, Wotancraft, Piotr or Simona Straps.

Strap size is 24 mm and or 26 mm and at least 80mm by 140mm or larger.

Agreed, there are a lot of custom strapmakers at the top of thier craft, some reasonable some less so. Quality of the leather is often secondary to the quality of the strapmaker

accuracy cost money, how close you wanna get?

my advice to all newbies, buy the best movement you can afford up front and you will have very few that you are not happy with

Thanks for such a great response! The leather would primarily be either Togo or Epsom, which are both suited for straps, although Epsom is better, more hardwearing. Essentially I would be getting scraps that are left over after the production of rep Hermes bags. I work with a factory who source their leathers direct from HAAS and Perlinger tanneries, so the leather can be pointed back to those tanneries.

The colors and the leathers for each color would vary from week to week. As for price-points, that is something I was hoping you guys could help me in figuring out, as essentially these scraps can't be used to make bags, but can be sold to another factory that makes small leather goods.

I was aiming at having the straps hand-made, by a very skilled craftsmen, although I only know him by reputation, and have not seen his work personally (as this is just a new idea for me at the moment).

Feel free to PM me with any ideas!

Price of the straps will be the determinig factor on how you proceed.
