Lovely watch! It's always nice to hear about something different and obviously well-built and accurate!:D

No mods. Just buy it and love it! Although, I'm sure that may be fun for some, other just want to have a super replica and work it in their everyday lives.

This is a very good review and I liked reading it, By.

Thanks Posh!

PS: HERE (http://rapidshare.com/files/140012616/movie_wmv_high.wmv.html) is a small "bonus" file. It's the official Ebel (hi-res) promotional movie of the Discovery line. Worth watching!

Thanks man, appreciated.

Yes, pretty much all our dealers can source this watch.

PS: I'd love to see some real-life pics of the black as well. All members so far have bought the "Panda".

Excellent review! Enjoyed it a lot!

Never would have seen this watch until this review came out. If it was a little larger watch I'd love to have it. That bracelet is really cool.

This is a beautiful watch. Thanks so much for the review. I probably would have ignored this model if you hadn't written it up.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. :hi:

I will post pics of this and my other watches later, so you can compare the size better. However, I just re-measured it and it's exact 43mm (same as gen). The dealers definitely advertise this with wrong size (44.5mm).

i've always like Ebel, but now that you have reviewed this watch i want one.. it's sharp, and as always by-tor another awesome review!

Thanks Chris. I'm happy that this amazing rep gets the attention it deserves... and it's nice to notice that this hobby is not just all about Rolex, Omega, PAM and Breitling... the thread got really busy at RWG, which was a nice reward for the job (for a change). ;)

Excellent review on a beautiful watch BT. I just wish it was priced like the Skyland.

By-Tor

Thanks guys. Strange how the size divides the members... some people (like me) are very happy that it wears smaller and more balanced, and are more fond of the "classic" sized watches.

But I can assure you, at 43mm it wears larger than say, Daytona... which in reality feels like a 37-38mm watch.

When I put this and Aquaracer chrono side-by-side, the size looks similar (which it is, 43mm)... but the "wearing size" of the 'Racer is MUCH bigger. Perhaps the huge protruded pushers and crown "shrink" the Discovery visually somehow? The profile of this watch is rather slim too... and the smooth case edges help a lot.

@Outsider: Yes, it's a bit pricey... but could it be that they have made much smaller production run of Ebels, which has never been a "mainstream watch", and is not excepted to sell that much... thus, the higher price tag.

Very good review BT! Actually

I also loved this watch immediately. It's quite a nice watch between all the usual stuff. I have the same with some IWC's and a DeWitt watch I can't seem to decide if I should order it.

Ths Ebel really is awesome ... wear it well!

Takashi just observed that the rep datewheel is identical with the gen white version. See this (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u214/tp2112/gen_1.jpg) gen reference photo.

The gen black one seems to be using the standard ETA datewheel, which is different from the white version. Quite weird. This was something I didn't notice at all, but as I wrote in my review the datewheel looked exceptionally good.

Once again, this rep is insanely accurate. Maybe the most accurate rep so far? Besides the crown and pushers (which protrude too much) I can't find ANY flaws. None, zilch, zip.

Thanks all.

Ok guys, here's finally a comparison shot which (imho) shows the actual "wearing size" of this watch.

Next to my 40mm gen GMT. As you can see the advertised 44.5 is totally out of this world and inaccurate measurement. The correct diameter is 43mm, and the actual "wearing size" is like 41mm. Definitely not a big watch.

Bytor - great review and write up. I have always liked the Ebels. I bought a genuine for my wife. On me, it it not my style. I think it might be because of wrist shot. I like the chunkier stuff now - and it is a little too elegant for me.

Thanks for the great writeup and comparo.

Simply stunning photo's once again! Very elegant and classic looking watch just as cskent said.

What I like about these reviews is that there aren't too many words and paragraphs and paragraphs of text, but everything that needs to be said, gets said very well.

I agree this is a really nice wathch. I have the Yellow 1911 in a watch case with about 15 other replicas, and the Ebel stands out as my favorite! Just looking at the quality of that watch makes all others look cheap. But, I can't put my finger on exaclty what qualities the others are lacking because it just doesn't seem as refined. The Ebel just looks more expensive...

I don't have a watch with a white face yet, and I am definetely going to pick one up not only becase of this review, but also because I am so happy with the quality of my other Ebel. I just want to wear it more than the others!

I am going to choose white as well, because almost all my other reps have black dials. This will be my first white dial. The other Ebel has a really nice leather band w/ yellow stitching, so I am looking forward to the SS bracelet on this with the hidden clasp. Looks very classy...

I was originally going to get a TAG Carrera Chronograph in white, but the Ebel just somehow looks better + also has the day as well as the date. A plus in my book. I have a TAG Aquaracer in blue coming from Andrew, so I was able to resist the Tag for now, but might have to pick it up later.

I wore my Ebel 1911 to a jewelry store today to get a bracelet resized. I had them take out about 4-5 other watches out of the case, and NONE of them even came close to compareing to the Ebel. And these watches were being sold for 5k+!!

The movements weren't as smooth as the 28.8 7550 and just looked boreing. Although one with a open caseback did look nice from the back. I actually kind of sad this version does not have the open caseback as the other has. It's really a nice feature, but I guess the GEN is closed as well.

Can't wait to pick this up!!

You won't have many options, Christophe...Ebels do not use springbars, but rather have a proprietary screw mounting system for bracelets and straps. You'll be limited to a rep (and perhaps a gen, if they fit) Ebel strap.

Well well... just like the Skyland blacksteel, the Discovery price has come down as well. It used to be around $380, now only $278 at Trusty's site.

Sorry BT, I was referring to the 1911 BTR137 .....

What do you think?

Did you see the RWG thread (http://www.rwg.cc/members/Movement-Compact-Subdia-t94045.html) about the new modification of 7750, which makes it possible to put those subdials closer to eachother?

Of course we don't know how that mod affects the reliability of the movement... but you might want to await for that update.

Personally, I don't care about the subdial spacing that much... it's not a big issue for me. I'd much rather like to see the BTR rotor implemented to the rep. That being said... I already have a yellow BTR coming. I couldn't wait any longer. :D

I love the panda dial, but just cannot like anything polished.

The subdials on the rep are dark grey as well. But when you put a watch into a lightbox and use a heavy light exposure and alter the contrast during the post-processing, it might alter the shades of grey/black a little.

No, I don't take my watches to water. Gen or rep.

Chronographs and water isn't very good combination because of the buttons.

Hey By-tor,

Now that you're amazing rep has come out I can find the previous quartz version you also reviewed for cheap- like $70. Worth it? How would you compare the quality of the finish and bracelets, which are super comfy and look great on the gens? I might spring for the 7750 but not for a while.

BTW already loved this watch form the gens, it looks great on, as I discovered at the AD, it was my favorite in the whole shop.

By-Tor
07-18-2009, 05:05 PM
@denverbass: The quartz version doesn't compare at all... it's not even fair to compare them. Back then it was the only possibility though.

It's a no-brainer: go for the 7750 version.
